Aiming for Spiritual Growth — Growth in Our Relationships with Others

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” (Ephesians 5:25)

In our previous reflection, we looked at how God provides the ultimate example in our relationships with others. From the verse above, we can learn how Jesus—the absolute best role model—treated those around Him. Jesus is the One who gave His very life for His neighbors.

Loving to the point of laying down one’s life is not something just anyone can do. Therefore, it is safe to say that there is no love greater or more valuable than this. In our daily lives, situations where we must love at the risk of our own lives are few and far between. In other words, God does not expect us to literally sacrifice our physical lives.

So, as we strive to love others as Jesus loved the church, what should we keep in mind first? It is to keep love as a conscious choice, even when we find ourselves in situations where loving feels impossible.

Before we reach a point where we feel unable to love, something has usually occurred that stirs up our emotions. Choosing to keep love as an option—even when we feel unable to love, forgive, or accept—is the true mark of spiritual growth rooted in love.

Even when we struggle to love and fall short, it does not change the fact that Jesus loves us and gave Himself for us. To love those around us, let us first remain steadfast in the Lord’s love.
