Aiming for Spiritual Growth: Growth in Relationships with Our Neighbors
“…’Love your neighbor as yourself.'” (Luke 10:27)
When building relationships with our neighbors, the Bible teaches us as seen in the scripture above. Jesus also says, “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you” (Matthew 7:12).
At first glance, these scriptures might seem to suggest that we should love with ourselves at the center. However, if we aim for spiritual growth, as mentioned last time, it is vital to strive to love as the Bible teaches: “just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:25). In other words, it means placing the cross of Jesus between ourselves and our neighbors as we build these relationships.
We humans are inherently self-centered beings. Even after being saved by Jesus and forgiven of our sins, a self-centered way of living can easily spring up again. Each time this happens, we need to repent, humble ourselves, and go through this process to be transformed into the likeness of Jesus. If we forget this, we will only be capable of loving in a self-centered way.
When you love your neighbor, if your desire is “I want to bring joy to that person,” that pure love serves as your motivation. Sometimes our expressions may not get through depending on how we communicate them, but as we practice loving one another in fellowship with the family of God, we can refine how effectively we convey that love. Therefore, let us cherish our fellowship with one another.
