Spiritual Growth in Relationships with Neighbors

Then Peter came up and said to him, ‘Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.’” (Matthew 18:21–22)

Whether adults or children, no one finds it easy to forgive others. The psychology behind the inability to forgive is that the unforgiving person holds tightly to the fact that they were hurt. They also cannot forgive out of a sense of vigilance, fearing they might be hurt again. Sometimes, they even think that forgiving will only lead to the same behavior being repeated, which wouldn’t be good for the other person.

I myself used to be trapped in these kinds of thoughts quite often. At one time, there was someone I simply could not forgive. It was clear that this person suspected me based on their own assumptions and looked at me with eyes full of suspicion. Realizing this made me angry, and I tried to maintain my own righteousness, telling myself that there was nothing wrong with my inability to forgive. For about two years, I ignored that person and continued to openly exude an aura of discontent whenever we met.

However, one day, I was suddenly made aware that my attitude was wrong before the Lord. I headed to that person’s house and went to apologize. At that moment, rather than being consumed by thoughts like “this person won’t change” or “they will do the same thing to me again,” I felt a strong prompting to humble myself before the Lord. I experienced firsthand that when the Holy Spirit works, we are given a heart capable of forgiving even the unforgivable. Jesus is the only one who can continually forgive seventy-seven times, and He is the One who transforms us to do the same.
