The Wind of Grace

Spiritual Growth in Trusting the Lord (Part 2)

“While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.” (Mark 14:3)

Trusting the Lord is an absolute prerequisite for showing His love and sharing the Gospel; it is the core motivation behind our actions and words as Christians. In other words, our life of faith is shaped and built upon our trust in the Lord.

The Scripture passage above describes an event before Jesus went to the cross, where a woman poured extremely costly nard perfume over Him to prepare for His burial. Although this perfume was contained in a small jar, its value was reportedly equivalent to a worker’s annual wage at the time.

In response to her action, those around her grew indignant, saying, “Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor.” Yet, paying no mind to their criticism, she freely demonstrated her love for Jesus.

Many Christians tend to worry excessively about the opinions and reputations of others, which leads them to limit their own actions driven by faith. When we overthink by trying not to inconvenience others or strain relationships, we rob our minds of the room for the Holy Spirit to work—something we truly need to repent of.

Without a doubt, trust in the Lord was the bedrock of this woman’s faith. Let us also draw near to the Lord boldly each day, so that our trust in Him will never be shaken by the eyes or opinions of others.
