Spiritual Growth as a Church (Part 2)
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (James 1:22)
What we must treasure in our life of faith as a church is maintaining a balance between hearing God’s Word and practicing it.
If we neglect hearing the Word and focus solely on doing it, our church risks becoming overly action-driven—much like a strict, performance-based sports team. We might come to believe that we cannot be fine Christians unless we are constantly serving. Eventually, we may even wrongly think that we cannot be saved unless we serve exceptionally well.
On the other hand, if we only hear the Word but do not practice it, as stated in the verse above, we deceive ourselves. The Bible uses an illustration in verses 23–27 to describe this state of self-deception, teaching that it is like someone who immediately forgets what they looked like. In other words, the wonderful teachings of Scripture do not take root, and one continues to live according to old ways of thinking, values, and perspectives. In our daily spiritual lives, this manifests through excuses, stubbornness, and indifference.
The spiritual growth we aim for as a church begins with first listening to God’s Word. It is about understanding the heart and intention of the Lord behind the Word He has spoken. As we share in His heart, we pray and ask Him to grant us the power to obey His Word and carry out His will. Let us never forget that it is those who do the will of God who will enter the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 7:21).
