The Wind of Grace
Spiritual Growth as a Church (Part 5)
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.(Philippians 2:3)
In the past, when I had the opportunity to spend time with a pastor who serves as the representative of an organization, he said, “What I keep in mind is to respect the people of the church.” Hearing this, I was deeply moved and felt that someone like him is truly fit to lead such an organization.
Furthermore, a leader is not defined simply by having impressive leadership capabilities. As Jesus said, “The greatest among you will be your servant” (Matthew 23:11)—this is what is required of us. The leadership that Jesus teaches is demonstrated through serving others, not by trying to assert dominance or act superior to them.
Fellowship within the church takes various forms, but biblical principles guide how we interact with one another. One of these key principles is found in the Scripture: “in humility value others above yourselves.” In practical terms, this means showing honor, expressing respect, and treating others with kindness and care.
In our interactions with people, there are times when someone speaks down to others without realizing it—even though everyone around them notices it. Because our old self can resurface, we tend to put ourselves first, leading to self-assertion, condescension, or trying to display superiority over others.
Let us pray that God grants us a heart of respect that truly considers others better than ourselves, and let us continue to build genuine fellowship together.
