ヨナ書 ４章 １～11節
“ところが、このことはヨナを非常に不愉快にした。ヨナは怒って、
主に祈った。「ああ、主よ。私がまだ国にいたときに、このことを申し上げたではありませんか。それで、私は初めタルシシュへ逃れようとしたのです。あなたが情け深くあわれみ深い神であり、怒るのに遅く、恵み豊かで、わざわいを思い直される方であることを知っていたからです。
ですから、主よ、どうか今、私のいのちを取ってください。私は生きているより死んだほうがましです。」
主は言われた。「あなたは当然であるかのように怒るのか。」
ヨナは都から出て、都の東の方に座った。そしてそこに自分で仮小屋を作り、都の中で何が起こるかを見極めようと、その陰のところに座った。
神である主は一本の唐胡麻を備えて、ヨナの上をおおうように生えさせ、それを彼の頭の上の陰にして、ヨナの不機嫌を直そうとされた。ヨナはこの唐胡麻を非常に喜んだ。
しかし翌日の夜明けに、神は一匹の虫を備えられた。虫がその唐胡麻をかんだので、唐胡麻は枯れた。
太陽が昇ったとき、神は焼けつくような東風を備えられた。太陽がヨナの頭に照りつけたので、彼は弱り果て、自分の死を願って言った。「私は生きているより死んだほうがましだ。」
すると神はヨナに言われた。「この唐胡麻のために、あなたは当然であるかのように怒るのか。」ヨナは言った。「私が死ぬほど怒るのは当然のことです。」
主は言われた。「あなたは、自分で労さず、育てもせず、一夜で生えて一夜で滅びたこの唐胡麻を惜しんでいる。
ましてわたしは、この大きな都ニネベを惜しまないでいられるだろうか。そこには、右も左も分からない十二万人以上の人間と、数多くの家畜がいるではないか。」”

Jonah’s Anger at the Lord’s Compassion
1But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry. 2He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. 3Now, Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”
4But the Lord replied, “Is it right for you to be angry?”
5Jonah had gone out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. 6Then the Lord God provided a leafy plant and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant. 7But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the plant so that it withered. 8When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.”
9But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”
“It is,” he said. “And I’m so angry I wish I were dead.”
10But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”
